aggrieved person has to provide contact details with full address of the respondents to court. Then court will serve summons. If addressee is absent summons are attempted again and so on. However, court need not wait for summons to be served before passing the interim order. That's how the respondent comes to know. That's the usual procedure in any civil case.

Akash, a quick query here: If one does not get DVC summons, how would one know a case has been filed against him? For e.g. husband and wife lives separately, wife goes and files DVC. It is only through court summons he will get to know and he will act to prepare for WS etc.
Or I am getting it wrong altogether?

In DVC even if you don't get summons served to you, the court can proceed ex-parte. So don't take the risk. If you cant be present on second date of DVC, ask your lawyer to file vakalatnama and take next date for filing reply.
You will be in deep soup if court grants huge maintenance ex-parte.
